Comfort

I treat you as I would my family and friends.  Your comfort is very important, because I cannot imagine practicing any other way.  The methods and tools available today allow us to practice dentistry comfortably, and here are ways to make that possible.  These are techniques and methods that can be practiced by anyone.

First and foremost:  allow enough time.  Time to listen to your questions,  time enough so that your care is not rushed, time enough for the anesthetic to take profound effect.

I allow enough time for anesthetic to work.  It might seem like a simple concept, but I frequently hear about times when people had dental treatment (in the past) and felt more numb after a procedure than during it.  This is easily remedied by merely allowing sufficient time for the anesthetic to take effect.

What can be done to help make sure you are comfortable:
bullet allow enough time
bullet listen to you
bullet put ourselves in your place
bullet watch your eyes
bullet stop when you want
bullet liberal and sufficient topical anesthetic
bullet anesthetic warmer
bullet warm water to rinse
bullet no lectures, no judgment

Concern for your comfort is a big part of what I pay attention to every day.  I earnestly try to put myself in your shoes.  I always watch your eyes out of the corner of my eyes to make sure you feel fine during any procedure.  At the very first sign that you may not be I will stop to make certain how you feel, and address that concern so that you are comfortable.

A standard and routine part of our injection technique also is to use a liberal amount of topical (surface) anesthetic gel to numb the gum/tissue to make an injection even more comfortable, and it works.

Another component of a comfortable injection is time.  A fast injection is typically uncomfortable, so that unlike a vaccination, I take the time to make sure the injection is comfortable.

Anesthetic warmers are very helpful to increase the anesthetic liquid close to body temperature, thereby adding one more small component to maximizing comfort.

It has always been my approach to work together.  I believe this can best be accomplished with honest feedback and candid conversation.  Furthermore, the realization of health is something I cannot do for someone; however, I can teach, support and guide in the context of an open relationship.  This is more easily accomplished when comfort is taken for granted, and I wish that for everyone.
