In 1988
I decided to care for children
differently, better. It soon became apparent that this different way of
thinking applied to everyone.
plaque stained
no plaque!
Typically when
children have had their teeth checked and cleaned, they were polished (tartar
was also removed if present). It always seemed silly that for only one day your child would
have their teeth plaque-less, so I finally decided to do something that I'd considered for a
couple years - really teach children to clean their teeth. Instead of
merely
polishing children's teeth, I prefer to help them understand what it is
they are cleaning, how to tell if their teeth are clean (see
Dry
Brushing), and what can happen if
they are not. Part of how we do this is using a plaque stain to help children visualize that plaque
(sugarbugs for the kids) is present, where it is, and when it is
gone. The most important elements of this method include these components
we all want:
working with
children rather than doing it for them
allowing them the time to understand the
process
encouraging and supporting their
efforts
treating them with respect
and non-judgment
These all build understanding,
self-confidence, self-esteem, and health. The benefits are enormous, and it is easy and fun
for the children.
Once you
think about it this way, can you imagine any other?
